Cycling can be challenging on your body, especially if you don’t have the right kit. Cycling shorts are perhaps the most important.
A good pair of cycling shorts will prevent saddle sores, reduce chafing, and make the overall cycling experience much more comfortable. They are breathable and allow you to pedal without being restricted. This level of enhanced comfort, temperature regulation, performance and aerodynamics underpin all SCODY cycling bib shorts and knicks.
In this blog we will discuss why our high-performance cycling shorts will allow you to perform at your best. We outline different types of cycling shorts, and which cycling bibs and shorts we recommend for you.
FIT
Cycling shorts must fit well. The fit should be tight but comfortable. The shorts must hold the pad in place, and you don’t want wrinkles in the fabric as they can cause chaffing.
CHAMOIS
The cycling pad or chamois should provide shock absorption in the right places, protect you from chafe points, reduce pressure points and remain effective for the duration of your ride. A soft chamois is comfortable for short distances but will eventually go flat and become ineffective. For this reason, many riders prefer a firm chamois as it will remain effective over longer distances.
The cover fabric on the pad should have moisture management properties, anti-microbial properties and it needs to prevent friction. The pad itself should allow moisture to pass through to the outside so that it can evaporate and keep the chamois dry.
The SCODY chamois is laser cut and uses a multi-density open cell foam from a leading Italian chamois manufacturer. The foam will not absorb moisture and has channels to allow moisture to travel to the outside where it can evaporate.
FABRIC
The fabrics should wick away moisture and compress muscles. The fabric should have anti-microbial properties to prevent the build-up of bacteria and odour. The fabric needs to be sufficiently robust to withstand rubbing on a smooth saddle and it needs to be compressive enough not to be see through when stretched. At SCODY we use fabrics that are 250gsm + for cycling shorts. This provides maximum comfort and optimal performance for all cyclists regardless of which competitive or casual ride you embark on.
GRIPPER
At SCODY we use fine silicone bead gripper on legs for those who like it. The gripper will mould to the size and shape of the leg without being too tight.
As an alternative we also use a double layer of fabric below the muscle mass to hold the legs in place and this can be a more comfortable option.
BODY TEMPERATURE
The fabric can be used to keep you warm or cool and riders should select the right shorts for the conditions.
DURABILITY
The spandex yarns in the fabric will deteriorate over time. When spandex deteriorates the shorts loose stretch and become see through. Proper care can prolong the life of spandex products. Avoid heat, chemicals, and abrasion.
STYLE
The main styles of cycling shorts are:
- Bib shorts
o Bib shorts have suspenders that keep the shorts in place.
o The design of the bib or suspender part of the shorts and the materials used can make you warm or cool
- Cycling shorts
- Loose shorts with inner
o Typically these shorts are used for commuting or for mountain biking
- Underwear with chamois
The choice of style is a personal preference. The leg length varies from a full leg to a short leg. SCODY knick and bibs tend to be cut just above the knee. We also offer full leg bibs and ¾ bibs for women.
Custom Cycling Shorts
Custom cycling shorts complete the look for clubs and teams.
